Updated on 22 May 2026

The SASSA SRD R350 grant is now officially R370 per month, increased from R350 in April 2024. Most South Africans still search for it as the R350 grant, so this guide covers everything you need to know about your SRD grant whether you call it R350 or R370.

Check your SRD R350 (R370) status in 3 steps:

Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status → Enter your ID number and phone number → Click Submit

Is the SRD grant still R350?

No - the SRD grant is no longer R350. It was increased to R370 per month in April 2024. The R20 monthly increase was announced in the February 2024 Budget Speech, the first increase since the grant launched in May 2020.

The grant is officially called the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant. Most people still call it the R350 grant out of habit, and search engines still send millions of people to pages about "R350" every month. SASSA itself uses the R370 amount on all official communications, but the underlying grant, eligibility rules, and application process are the same.

Throughout this guide, every reference to R350 means the current R370 SRD grant. If you applied for the R350 grant in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, or early 2024, your active application is still valid and now pays R370 per approved month.

How to check your SRD R350 status

There are four ways to check your R350 (R370) SRD status. The website is the only one that shows you a full month-by-month result.

1. Online (best - shows full monthly status)

  1. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status
  2. Enter your 13-digit South African ID number
  3. Enter the cellphone number you used when you applied
  4. Click Submit
  5. You will see each month listed with one of these results: Pending, Approved, Declined, or Paid

For a more detailed walk-through with screenshots of every status type, see our SASSA SRD status check guide.

2. WhatsApp (limited - info only)

Save the official SASSA SRD WhatsApp number 082 046 8553 and send the word STATUS. WhatsApp will give you information and a link back to the website. You cannot see your full month-by-month status on WhatsApp - it will redirect you to srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status for the actual result.

3. Phone (toll-free)

Call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11. The call is free from any South African network. An agent can confirm your status, but they will usually direct you to the website for detailed results.

4. SASSA office visit

Visit your nearest SASSA office with your green ID book or ID card. Staff can check your R350 (R370) status on the system. Find your nearest office using our SASSA branch finder.

Warning: there is no working USSD code for R350 status check.
You may find old articles online listing USSD codes like *120*69277# or *120*3210# for SRD status checks. These codes do not work. The legacy USSD codes were discontinued years ago. The only reliable way to check your R350 status is through the website, WhatsApp, phone, or in person.

SRD R350 (R370) payment dates

SRD R350 payments are processed in a window from the 24th of each month to the last business day of that month. Your exact pay date shows on your status page once your month is approved. Payments do not run on weekends or public holidays.

Banks typically take 2 to 3 working days to reflect the R370 payment in your account after SASSA releases it.

How much is the SRD grant now?

The SRD grant is currently R370 per month. Here is the full history of the grant amount:

PeriodMonthly amountNotes
May 2020 - April 2024R350Original Covid SRD amount, kept flat for almost 4 years
April 2024 - presentR370R20 monthly increase announced in February 2024 Budget

Despite the increase, the grant is still informally known as the R350 grant because it ran at that amount for almost four years. Compare with other SASSA grant amounts on our SASSA grant amounts 2026 page.

What if you were declined for the R350?

If your SRD R350 (R370) application or a specific month was declined, you can appeal within 90 days of the decision. For appeals based on Identity Verification Failed, the window is shorter - 30 days.

The most common reasons SASSA declines an R350 application are:

  • Means Income (over R624 in the bank): SASSA checks your bank accounts. If you received income over R624 in the month being checked, you will be declined.
  • UIF Registered: If you are receiving UIF benefits, you cannot get the R350.
  • NSFAS Registered: Students funded by NSFAS do not qualify.
  • Alternative Income Source: SASSA detected income from another source.
  • Identity Verification Failed: The ID, name, or surname you used did not match Home Affairs records.
  • Other SASSA Grant: You already receive another SASSA grant (Old Age, Disability, etc.).
  • Self-Exclusionary Response: You answered a question on the application in a way that excluded yourself.
  • Deceased: SASSA records show the ID as deceased - if this is wrong, you must update with Home Affairs first.

How to appeal:

  1. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals
  2. Enter your ID number and registered cellphone
  3. Click Send Pin and enter the OTP you receive by SMS
  4. Select the month you want to appeal
  5. Upload supporting documents (for example, three months of bank statements showing no income)
  6. Submit and wait - appeals take 60 to 90 days

Reapplying for the R350 grant

You do not need to reapply for the R350 grant every month if you already have an active application. SASSA reuses the same application and checks your eligibility each month against bank, SARS, UIF and NSFAS databases.

However, SASSA does require you to reconfirm your details from time to time. If you get an SMS or see a "Reconfirm" prompt on your status page, you must do it within the deadline or your grant will be paused.

If you previously cancelled your R350 grant, or your application was closed for inactivity, you need to reinstate it:

  1. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za
  2. Scroll to How do I reinstate my SRD application?
  3. Enter your ID and the cellphone you used before
  4. Click Send Pin and follow the steps

Step-by-step guides:

Update your details (R350 grant)

Keep your contact and banking information current so your R350 (R370) payments are not delayed. The two updates most people need are phone number and banking details.

Change your phone number

If you lost your old phone or changed your number, you cannot just enter a new number on the website - SASSA needs to verify it is really you. Follow the Change SRD phone number guide. You will usually need the last 4 digits of the bank account on your application.

Change your banking details

Your R350 (R370) must be paid into a bank account in your own name. To switch banks or update your account number:

  1. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za
  2. Click How do I change my banking details?
  3. Enter your ID and you will get an SMS link to a secure SASSA page
  4. Choose Bank Account or Cash Send and enter the details

SRD R350 (R370) frequently asked questions

Is the SRD R350 grant ending?
No. The SRD grant is not ending. It was renamed and increased to R370 in April 2024, but most people still call it the R350 grant. National Treasury extended the SRD grant in the 2026 Budget. The grant is still paid every month to people who qualify.
When was the R350 grant increased to R370?
The SRD grant was increased from R350 to R370 in April 2024. The R20 increase was announced in the February 2024 Budget Speech. Since April 2024, every approved monthly SRD payment has been R370.
Can I still apply for the R350 grant?
Yes. You can still apply for the SRD grant (now R370) at srd.sassa.gov.za. You only need to apply once. After that, SASSA checks your eligibility every month against bank, SARS, UIF and NSFAS records.
How do I check my R350 status using my ID number?
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status. Enter your 13-digit South African ID number and the cellphone number you used when you applied. Click Submit. You will see your status for each month: Pending, Approved, Declined, or Paid.
Why was my R350 application declined?
The most common reasons are: an income check showed money in your bank account over R624 for that month, you are registered for UIF, you are registered with NSFAS, you receive another SASSA grant, or your identity details did not match Home Affairs records. You can appeal within 90 days.
When will I receive my R350 (R370) payment?
SRD payments are processed in batches between the 24th and the last business day of each month. The exact date for your payment shows on your status page once approved. Banks can take 2 to 3 working days to reflect the money in your account.
Can I get back-pay for R350 months I missed?
You can only get paid for months where your application was actually approved. SASSA does not pay back-pay for months you did not apply for or were declined for without a successful appeal. If a month is approved with no payment date, the payment will appear during the next payment window.
How long does R350 status check take?
The status check itself is instant - you see a result on screen as soon as you submit. If your status is "Pending", verification with banks, SARS and Home Affairs can take a few days to several weeks. New identity verification cases can take 60 to 90 days.
Is the R350 grant the same as the SRD R370?
Yes. R350 and R370 refer to the same grant. The grant name is the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant. It was R350 from May 2020 to April 2024. From April 2024 it pays R370. Everything else about the grant (who qualifies, how to apply, payment dates) stayed the same.
What is the difference between SRD R350 and other SASSA grants?
The SRD grant is short-term help for adults aged 18 to 59 with no income. Other SASSA grants are long-term: Old Age (R2,400), Disability (R2,400), Child Support (R580), Foster Care (R1,290), Care Dependency (R2,400), and War Veterans (R2,420). You can only get one SASSA grant at a time.
