OurPower (ourpower.co.za) is an independent South African utility and government-services information site. Founded in 2018, OurPower provides South Africans with clear, accurate information about government grants, utility schedules and everyday services.

Our principles

• Independent - OurPower is not affiliated with the South African government, SASSA, Eskom, any municipality or any utility company.
• Free to read - all information on OurPower is free. There are no subscriptions, no sign-ups required, and no paywalls.
• Verified - information is sourced from official publications and verified before going live.
• Up to date - government rules, grant amounts and utility schedules change. Pages are reviewed regularly and updated when official sources publish changes.

How we work

Information on OurPower is researched from official sources and verified before publication. Different content types use different sources:

• SASSA grants and payment dates - sourced from SASSA, the Department of Social Development and gazetted regulations.
• Load shedding and load reduction schedules - sourced from Eskom and municipal utility schedules.
• Water outages and dam levels - sourced from municipal water utilities and the Department of Water and Sanitation weekly hydrology reports.
• Power outages - sourced from official utility communications.
• Fuel prices - sourced from the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy monthly publications.

Where a page makes a specific factual claim, the source is cited. Phone numbers, URLs, amounts and addresses are not invented - if a fact cannot be verified against an official source, it is not published. Time-sensitive pages (SASSA payment dates, monthly announcements) are reviewed at least once per month.

Editorial standards

• All facts are verified against official sources before publishing.
• Government grant amounts are updated promptly when officially announced or gazetted.

How OurPower is funded

OurPower is supported by advertising and a small number of affiliate links:

• Display advertising - Google AdSense and Publift serve the advertising on the site. Specific ads shown to readers are determined by these ad networks.
• Affiliate links - a small number of pages may link to third-party services (insurance, solar installers, financial products) where OurPower receives a commission on sign-ups. These links are placed only where genuinely relevant to the page topic. Affiliate income does not influence editorial content.

OurPower does not charge any reader fee. Reader data, email lists and browsing behaviour are not sold to third parties. Advertising partners may use cookies for personalisation - see the Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy for details.

What OurPower cannot do

OurPower is a third-party information site. OurPower cannot:

• Check the status of a specific SASSA application (use srd.sassa.gov.za)
• Apply for grants on behalf of readers
• Change banking details with SASSA, a municipality or any utility
• Give legal, financial, medical or immigration advice
• Restore power or water - that is the relevant municipality or Eskom
