SASSA SRD Appeal (2026): How to Appeal a Declined SRD & Check Appeal Status

Updated on 25 March 2026

If your SASSA SRD R370 grant has been declined, you have the right to appeal within 90 days. This guide explains exactly how to submit an appeal, check your appeal status, and what to do when multiple months are declined.

How to Appeal a Declined SASSA SRD Grant

Appeals are handled by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), not by SASSA directly. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the official tribunal portal: srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals
  2. Enter your 13-digit ID number and the cellphone number used on your SRD application
  3. Click Send Pin, enter the OTP to authenticate
  4. Select the declined month, state your reason clearly, and upload supporting proof (e.g., bank statement showing no income)
  5. Submit and save your reference number. Check the portal regularly for updates

Important: Only use the official appeals portal. Avoid third-party sites that ask for your personal details.

Check Your SRD Appeal Status Online

To check whether your appeal has been approved, declined, or is still pending:

  1. Visit srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals
  2. Log in with your ID number and cellphone number
  3. Verify with the OTP sent to your phone
  4. View the status for each month you appealed

Typical statuses you will see:

  • Pending — your appeal is still being reviewed
  • Approved (appeal successful) — the decline has been overturned and payment will be processed
  • Declined (appeal unsuccessful) — the original decision stands

You can also check your general SRD grant status on the SRD Status Check page. Note that appeal status is managed separately by ITSAA and your SRD page updates only after SASSA receives the tribunal outcome.

Common Reasons for SRD Decline

Understanding why your SRD was declined helps you prepare a stronger appeal. The most common reasons include:

  • Income above R624 detected — SASSA checks bank data and if any income above the threshold is found, your grant is declined for that month
  • Receiving another grant — if you receive a Child Support Grant, Old Age Grant, Disability Grant, or any other SASSA grant, you are not eligible for SRD
  • UIF or NSFAS benefits — receiving Unemployment Insurance Fund or National Student Financial Aid Scheme payments disqualifies you
  • Identity mismatch or data errors — incorrect ID information or Home Affairs records that do not match
  • Duplicate applications — more than one application linked to your ID

When appealing, provide proof that addresses the specific reason for your decline. For example, if declined for income, attach a bank statement showing no deposits for the relevant month.

How Long Does a SASSA Appeal Take?

ITSAA reviews typically take 60 to 90 days from the date of submission. During busy periods, it may take longer. Here is what to expect:

  • Submission — you receive a reference number immediately
  • Review period — ITSAA reviews your appeal and supporting documents (60-90 days)
  • Outcome — your status on the portal updates to Approved or Declined
  • Payment — if approved, unpaid months are back-paid to your registered bank account or payment method

Make sure your banking details are correct and up to date to avoid payment delays after a successful appeal.

Can I Appeal Multiple Declined Months?

Yes. You can appeal each declined month individually on the ITSAA portal. Each month is reviewed separately, so:

  • Select one declined month at a time on the portal
  • Provide specific proof for each month (e.g., a bank statement for that specific period)
  • Each appeal has its own 90-day deadline from the date of decline
  • Results may come back at different times for different months

If you have multiple months declined, submit appeals for all of them as soon as possible to stay within the 90-day window.
