SRD Declined - You're Registered for UIF (How to Fix)
Updated on 22 May 2026
If your SASSA SRD status shows "UIF Registered" or "Registered for UIF", SASSA's automated check found your ID on the UIF database. Here is the catch: that database holds everyone who has ever had UIF contributions paid for them, going back years. So if you worked any job in the past, you are on it - even if you are not getting a cent from UIF today.
What "UIF Registered" decline means
SASSA checks your ID against the UIF database held by the Department of Labour. The automated system flags anyone on that database as "UIF registered". The problem is:
- Anyone who has ever paid UIF (or had it paid on their behalf) is on the database.
- SASSA wrongly declines people who are registered but not currently receiving UIF.
- This is the #1 wrongful SRD decline - and the most common reason people appeal.
Common causes
- You worked a job in the past where the employer paid UIF on your behalf. You are still on the database.
- You ARE currently receiving UIF - in which case the decline is correct (see below).
- Your former employer did not deregister you when you left, so the database still shows you as active.
- You are on UIF maternity, paternity, or parental leave - this is technically a UIF benefit and disqualifies you for that period.
How to fix it
- Step 1: Check your actual UIF status at uifecc.labour.gov.za or visit your nearest Labour Centre.
- Step 2: If you are NOT receiving UIF, get proof. The strongest combination is:
- UIF "no payments" letter from the Department of Labour (request at any Labour Centre).
- Sworn affidavit confirming you are not receiving UIF (free at SAPS, R30 at Commissioner of Oaths).
- Bank statements for the assessed month showing no UIF deposits.
- Step 3: Submit a reconsideration request on srd.sassa.gov.za within 90 days of the decline. Log in with your ID and registered cellphone, verify with OTP.
- Step 4: Upload your UIF proof and write a clear explanation.
- Step 5: Submit and wait 30 to 90 days for SASSA's review.
If you ARE receiving UIF
If you genuinely are receiving UIF benefits, the decline is correct. You cannot get both:
- You are not eligible for SRD R370 while on UIF (no double-dipping).
- Once UIF ends, you can reapply for SRD immediately.
- Make sure UIF is properly closed on the Department of Labour system - some people stay on the database after their claim ends, which causes the same wrongful decline later.
Sample appeal wording
Keep it short and specific. Use this template as a starting point:
"I am not currently receiving UIF benefits. My last UIF claim ended on [date], or I have never claimed UIF. Attached: UIF status letter from Department of Labour dated [date] showing no active claims, plus bank statement for [month] showing no UIF deposits, plus sworn affidavit. Please reconsider this decline."
How long does this take?
- Reconsideration: 30 to 60 days typical.
- Appeal to ITSAA if reconsideration is declined: 30 days from the decline to lodge; then 60 to 90 days for a decision.
- End-to-end: if both steps are needed, 3 to 6 months total.

FAQ
- How does SASSA know I'm registered for UIF?
- SASSA cross-checks your ID against the UIF database held by the Department of Labour. Anyone who has ever had UIF paid on their behalf is on it - permanently.
- Can I get SRD R370 if I'm on UIF?
- No. You cannot receive both. Once your UIF claim ends, you can reapply for SRD.
- How do I prove I'm not receiving UIF?
- Get a UIF status letter from the Department of Labour, plus a bank statement showing no UIF deposits, plus a sworn affidavit. Submit all three with your reconsideration.
- What's the difference between UIF registered and UIF receiving?
- Registered = your ID is on the UIF database (usually from past employment). Receiving = you are getting monthly UIF payouts now. You can be registered without receiving. SASSA's check does not separate these.
- Can I appeal an SRD decline for UIF if I never had a job?
- Yes. Get a UIF status letter showing zero history, attach a sworn affidavit, and submit reconsideration. If declined, appeal to ITSAA within 30 days.
