If your SASSA card has been lost or stolen, you need to act fast. The longer you wait, the greater the risk that someone else withdraws your grant money. This guide walks you through exactly what to do - from blocking the card to getting a replacement - so you can protect your money and get back on track as quickly as possible.

What to Do Immediately if Your SASSA Card Is Lost or Stolen

Do not wait. Follow these three steps as soon as you realize your card is missing:

Step 1: Block your card immediately

This is the most important step. Blocking the card prevents anyone else from withdrawing your grant money. Call one of these numbers right away:

If you cannot get through on the phone, go to your nearest Post Office branch in person and ask them to block your card immediately. Bring your South African ID document.

Step 2: Report to SAPS (if stolen)

If your card was stolen, go to your nearest police station and open a case. Ask for a copy of the case number or police affidavit - you will need this when you apply for a replacement card. Even if you think the card was simply lost, filing a police report protects you if unauthorized withdrawals are made.

Step 3: Apply for a replacement card

Your money is safe. Even while your card is blocked, your grant money continues to be deposited into your Postbank account. You will be able to withdraw accumulated funds once your new card is issued.

How to Block Your SASSA Card

You can block your SASSA card two ways:

By phone (fastest)

Call Postbank at 0800 53 54 55. This line is toll-free and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Have your ID number ready when you call. The agent will verify your identity and block the card while you are on the line.

You can also call the SASSA toll-free line at 0800 60 10 11 during office hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 16:00).

In person

Visit any South African Post Office branch with your ID document (smart card or green book). Ask the counter staff to block your SASSA card. They will process the block on the Postbank system.

Why blocking matters

If someone has your card and knows your PIN (or guesses it), they can withdraw your entire grant balance at any ATM. The sooner you block the card, the less money you risk losing. Once blocked, the card cannot be used for withdrawals, purchases, or any other transactions.

How to Get a Replacement SASSA Card

After blocking your card, follow these steps to get a new one:

Visit your nearest SASSA office or a Post Office branch that handles SASSA card services. Most major Post Office branches in town centres and shopping malls offer this service. Call the Post Office helpline at 0860 111 502 to confirm before visiting.

Documents you need

  • South African ID document - smart ID card or green book (original, not a copy)
  • SAPS case number or police affidavit - required if your card was stolen
  • Proof of address - not always required, but bring it if you have it (utility bill, lease agreement, or affidavit)

Processing time

A replacement card typically takes 5 to 10 working days from the date you apply. Some larger branches may issue the card on the same day if they have card stock available. The processing time can be longer around the beginning of the month when branches are busier.

Replacement cards for SASSA beneficiaries are free. If anyone asks you to pay for a replacement card, report it to SASSA on 0800 60 10 11. Never pay unofficial fees to anyone claiming they can speed up the process.

While you wait for your new card

Your grant money continues to be deposited into your Postbank account every month, even while your card is blocked. Once your replacement card arrives, you can withdraw all accumulated funds. If you are in urgent need, ask a SASSA official about a temporary payment arrangement - in some cases they can arrange a manual payment at a Post Office counter while you wait for the new card.

SASSA Gold Card vs Postbank Black Card

If you had a Gold Card that was lost or stolen, you may receive a Postbank Black Card as your replacement. Here is what you need to know:

  • Gold Cards are being phased out. SASSA and Postbank are replacing them with the new Black Card. The deadline for the transition is 31 August 2026.
  • If your Gold Card is lost, you will receive a Black Card. New Gold Cards are no longer being issued in most branches.
  • The Black Card works everywhere. You can use it at all Saswitch-enabled ATMs, Post Office counters, and participating retailers - the same places your Gold Card worked.
  • Your Postbank account stays the same. Only the physical card changes. Your grant money, account number, and payment schedule are not affected.

How to Protect Your SASSA Card

Prevention is better than replacement. Follow these tips to keep your card and your money safe:

  • Never share your PIN with anyone. Not family, not friends, not "helpers" at the ATM, not even SASSA officials. Nobody legitimate will ever ask for your PIN.
  • Memorize your PIN. Do not write it on the card, on a piece of paper in your wallet, or save it in your phone. If someone gets your card and your PIN, they can take everything.
  • Do not let anyone "help" you at the ATM. A common tactic is for criminals to offer to help you use the ATM while watching your PIN, then swapping your card with a fake one.
  • Use ATMs inside shops or banks. Standalone ATMs on street corners are more likely to have skimming devices attached and are less safe, especially after dark.
  • Check the ATM for tampering. Before inserting your card, look at the card slot and keypad. If anything looks loose, bulky, or different from normal, do not use that ATM.
  • Cover the keypad. When entering your PIN, use your other hand to shield the keypad from cameras or onlookers.
  • Keep your card in a safe place. Treat it like cash. Do not leave it lying around at home or carry it loose in a bag where it can fall out.
  • Check your balance regularly. If you notice a withdrawal you did not make, report it immediately to Postbank at 0800 53 54 55.

Can Someone Else Collect My Grant While My Card Is Being Replaced?

Yes, in certain circumstances. SASSA allows another person to collect your grant on your behalf through a process called procuration (power of attorney for grant collection). This is useful if you are ill, disabled, elderly, or unable to travel to a pay point while waiting for your replacement card.

Requirements for a proxy to collect your grant

  • The proxy must have a valid South African ID document
  • You must complete a procuration form at your nearest SASSA office
  • You will need to provide a reason why you cannot collect in person (e.g., medical certificate, disability, or awaiting card replacement)
