How much you get (2025)

The War Veterans Grant pays R2,335 per month in 2025.

Who qualifies?

  • You served in World War I, World War II, or the Korean War.
  • You are a South African citizen or permanent resident and you live in South Africa.
  • You are 60 years or older, or you have a disability.
  • You do not receive another personal social grant and you are not living in a state‑funded institution.
  • You meet the means and assets tests.

Means and assets thresholds (guide)

  • If you are single, your yearly income should be about R107,880 or less.
  • If you are married, your combined yearly income should be about R215,760 or less.
  • The assets limit is about R1.524 million (single) or R3.049 million (married).
  • If you live in a house you or your spouse own, the value of that home is not counted in the means test.

Documents you need

  • Your ID (or a temporary ID/affidavit if your ID is lost).
  • Proof of veteran service (for example, a certificate of service).
  • Proof of marital status (marriage certificate, divorce order, or death certificate of a spouse).
  • Proof of income and assets if you have any (bank statements for the last 3 months, payslips, pension slips, investment statements).
  • Bank account details (recommended for easier payment).
  • If you are under 60 but disabled, bring a recent medical assessment/report that shows you cannot work.
  • If unemployed, bring your UIF blue book or a discharge certificate (if available).

How to apply

  1. Go to the SASSA office nearest to where you live with your documents listed above.
  2. Complete the application form in front of a SASSA official (they will help you if needed).
  3. Keep the receipt you are given as proof that you applied.
  4. Processing can take up to 90 days. If approved, you will be paid from the day you applied (back‑pay included in your first payment).
  5. The service is free. Forms are not online; you get them at SASSA offices.

How you will be paid

  • Cash at a specific pay point on your payment day.
  • Electronic deposit into your bank or Postbank account (your bank may charge normal fees).
  • Through an institution that acts as administrator (for example, a welfare organisation) if applicable.

If you cannot collect the money yourself, you can appoint a procurator at the SASSA office, or give someone power of attorney to collect on your behalf.

Reviews and life certificates

  • SASSA may review your grant. Your declared income and situation will be used to decide on reviews.
  • You will be notified three months before a review or when a life certificate is due.
  • If you receive money through a bank, an institution, or a procurator, you must complete a life certificate at the SASSA office each year.

When the grant may be suspended

  • Your circumstances change (for example, higher income or assets).
  • After a review, SASSA decides you no longer qualify.
  • You do not cooperate with a review.
  • There was a mistake in the original approval, or you committed fraud or misrepresentation.

When the grant stops (lapses)

  • When the beneficiary passes away.
  • Admission to a state institution (grants may be reduced to 25% after three months in such an institution and reinstated immediately on discharge).
  • If the grant is not claimed for three consecutive months.
  • When the beneficiary is absent from the country for an extended period.
