What to Do If Your Application Is Pending

If your application status shows as "pending" or "in progress", here is what you should do:

  • Check that all required documents have been uploaded and received by the university.
  • Make sure you have paid the application fee — unpaid applications are often not processed.
  • Log into the application portal regularly (at least once a week) to check for any status changes or requests for additional information.
  • Contact the university's admissions office if your status has not changed for more than 4–6 weeks after the closing date.
  • Keep checking your email (including spam/junk folders) for notifications from the university.
  • If you applied late, understand that your application may be placed on a waiting list and processed only if spaces are available.

NSFAS Funding

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides financial support to eligible South African students. NSFAS covers tuition, accommodation, and a living allowance at public universities and TVET colleges.

You can apply for NSFAS funding separately from your university application. NSFAS applications typically open around September and close in January for the following academic year. Apply online at www.nsfas.org.za.

NSFAS eligibility: You must be a South African citizen, have a combined household income of R350,000 or less per year, and be admitted to a public university or TVET college. SASSA grant recipients automatically qualify.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check my university application status?

Each university has its own online application portal. Visit the university's website, find the admissions or application section, and log in with your application number and password. Most portals show your current status (received, in progress, provisionally accepted, accepted, or unsuccessful). You can also call the university's admissions helpline for updates.

When do universities send acceptance letters?

Most South African universities begin sending acceptance letters from September for the following year. Top universities like UCT, Stellenbosch, and Wits may send early conditional offers from August or September. Final acceptance letters are typically sent between November and January, after matric results are released. UNISA operates on a rolling admissions basis.

Can I apply to multiple universities?

Yes, you can apply to as many universities as you like. There is no centralised application system in South Africa, so each university must be applied to separately. It is recommended to apply to at least 3–5 universities to improve your chances. Be aware that each application comes with its own fee (typically R100–R300).

What is the closing date for university applications 2026?

Closing dates vary by university. UCT and UP typically close on 31 July. Wits, UKZN, NWU, UFS, and most other traditional universities close around 30 September. UJ and Walter Sisulu University often close at the end of October. UNISA has separate deadlines for each semester. Always check the official university website for confirmed dates, as they can change year to year.

What do I need to apply to university in South Africa?

To apply, you will need: a certified copy of your South African ID (or passport for international students), your latest academic results (Grade 11 final results or Grade 12 mid-year results), proof of payment for the application fee, and a completed online application form. Some programmes require additional documents such as a motivational letter, portfolio, or National Benchmark Test (NBT) results. Check each university's specific requirements before applying.

Last updated: 12 March 2026. Application dates shown are typical and may change. Always verify on the official university website.
